Rowling says wizard Dumbledore is gay

NEW YORK: British author J K Rowling has outed one of the main characters of her best-selling Harry Potter series, telling fans in New York that the wizard Albus Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts school, is gay.
Speaking at Carnegie Hall on Friday night in her first US tour in seven years, Rowling confirmed what some fans had always suspected - that she "always thought Dumbledore was gay", reported entertainment website E! Online.
Rowling said that Dumbledore fell in love with the charming wizard Gellert Grindelwald but when Grindelwald turned out to be more interested in the dark arts than good, Dumbledore was "terribly let down" and went on to destroy his rival.
That love, she said, was Dumbledore's "great tragedy".
"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she said.
The audience reportedly fell silent after the admission - then erupted into applause.
Rowling, 42, said that if she had known that would be the response, she would have revealed her thoughts on Dumbledore earlier.
Fans on the top Potter fan site TheLeakyCauldron.org (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org) were divided on the news, some uncertain Rowling wasn't going to backtrack on the announcement, others saying that it was unnecessary, and some welcoming the extra information on Dumbledore.
"This is even more awesome because it adds another layer to Dumbledore's character, which is already so rich and complicated. I hope he got over Grindlevald (sic) and fell in love again," wrote Amanda.
Rowling said she had read through a script for the movie adaptation of the sixth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and corrected a passage in which Dumbledore was reminiscing about past loves by crossing it out and scrawling "Dumbledore is gay" over it.
Rowling, a mother of three, is now estimated to be worth $1.12bn, making her the first dollar billionaire author.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - the seventh and final book in the boy wizard series - became the fastest-selling book in history when it was released in July.
More than 11mn copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the US and Britain. - Reuters

Lawl@you.

Q: In the Goblet of Fire Dumbledore said his brother was prosecuted for practicing inappropriate charms [JKR buries her head, to laughter] on a goat; what were the inappropriate charms he was practicing on that goat?

JKR: How old are you?

Eight.

JKR: I think that he was trying to make a goat that was easy to keep clean [laughter], curly horns.

Come into my office Harry, I have candy o=

And a spokesman for gay rights group Stonewall added: "It's great that JK has said this. It shows that there's no limit to what gay and lesbian people can do, even being a wizard headmaster."
Best quote ever. Hahah.

She can say whatever she wants, and readers can believe whatever they want to believe. Fact is that it was not written into the books, so is it "canon"?

Take your sides, Potter fans, and place you bets, punter friends!

"Grindelweld. You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me. Muggles forced in subservience. We wizards triumphant. Grindelweld and I, the glorious young leaders of the revolution."

Dumbledore brave, brilliant; why not gay: Rowling

By Martin Roberts
J K ROWLING, whose Harry Potter series made her the first dollar billionaire author, said on Tuesday that she is surprised at the fuss surrounding her announcement the boy wizard's head teacher, Albus Dumbledore, was gay.
"It has certainly never been news to me that a brave and brilliant man could love other men," Rowling told a news conference in Toronto, where she is attending an authors' festival.
Rowling, a mother-of-three, made the surprise revelation in New York on Friday, during her first US tour in seven years.
She said that Dumbledore was once infatuated with the winsome wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but the two became rivals when Grindelwald turned out to be more interested in the dark than the good arts. Dumbledore went on to destroy Grindelwald.
Reaction has been mainly supportive on fans' websites, such as The Leaky Cauldron (http://www.leakynews.com), where news of Dumbledore's outing has drawn more than 3,000 comments.
Rowling declined to say whether her "outing" of Dumbledore might alienate those who disapprove of homosexuality.
"He is my character. He is what he is and I have the right to say what I say about him," she said.
Rowling said that she made no revelations about Dumbledore's sexuality before Friday, because she had never before been asked directly.
"People wanted so much information in advance of the story, that just to keep my sanity and keep my eye on my own plot, I did not give masses away ahead of time," she said.
The seventh and final book in the boy wizard series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows became the fastest selling book in history upon its release in July, selling more than 11mn copies in the first 24 hours in Britain and the US.
The fifth film of the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, received three nominations on Monday for Britain's film awards, the Baftas.
Rowling said she "probably won't" write a prequel to the series, but did not rule it out.
"Is that (a prequel) not a little bit Star Wars Episode I?" she quipped. "I'm not going to say 'never' because 'never' in my life acts as a red rag to bull and I've immediately wanted to do whatever it is I said never to."
Rowling said she might work on a Potter encyclopedia for charity, but only after a long break.
"It's like the break-up of a marriage. It's a good idea not to see each other for a while, then maybe you can be good friends afterwards," she said. - Reuters
